MY4 Performance, 26 January

The MY4 Show is a tradition here at Skagerak, and this year is no exception. Our class went through countless arguments and discussions, brainstorms and reflections, agreements and disagreements, blood, tears, and stress to the max. We are, however, very proud of what we have been able to produce as a class, and excited to present it to all of our friends, families, peers, and teachers.

The show's plot is, however, a secret. The performance date is the 26th of January 2017 at Verdensteateret, Kongensgate 1C Sandefjord, from 18:00 to 19:15.

We hope to see all of you there!

Holiday greetings from the principal

Dear Skagerak Parents,

Here we are in the month of December! The school year is now more than 1/3 of the way through, and shortly 2016 will come to a busy end here at Skagerak. Before the school disperses across the globe, Norway or stays to enjoy beautiful Sandefjord; I thought I would give an overview of the upcoming important dates and other information before we start our holiday. As always, if you have any questions or require more information about the events below, please contact the school.

Holiday show on Thursday December 8th, 6 pm to 8pm

Ms. Martinsen and the Primary students and staff have been hard at work on this years' Winter Performance Primary production. The show will be from 6 pm to 8pm in the High School auditorium followed by Christmas carols organized by the Parent Council, including a visit from a special guest. Children are to meet up from at 5:30 pm.

Ugly Sweater Day on Thursday December 8th

Thursday December 8th is also the Annual Ugly Sweater day in the Middle school with everyone encouraged to wear their most hideous sweater. Always a good laugh!

Radio CAS movie night Friday December 9th

The Middle School Radio Service and Action group is hosting a Christmas Movie video evening on Friday December 9th with movies catering to Primary and Middle School students. More information can be found on the classroom blogs.

Lunchtime dismissal on the last day of school Tuesday December 13th

A reminder that the last day before the December holiday is a half day with students being dismissed at 12:00 in the Primary school and 12:15 in the Middle School.

Holiday office hours

The school administration will be open 10 am to 2 pm 14- 21 December and will then close for holidays. The office reopens Monday 2 January.

Wednesday January 4th school starts

School resumes with normal times from Wednesday January 4th.

Early dismissal on Tuesdays from January 2017

Effective January 2017, the Primary and Middle School will be initiating an early dismissal day on Tuesdays. From January 10th onwards both the Primary and Middle school will be dismissed at 14:30 on Tuesdays to facilitate staff meetings and professional development as a school. SFO will continue to be offered until 16:30 on Tuesdays.

Lost and found

Every year an expansive collection of Lost and Found items are collected in the Primary and Middle school. These items are displayed in the front hallway of the red building until next week. Please take an opportunity to peruse the items. All remaining items will be donated to charity on December 14th.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students and parents for their continued support from August 15th. (which seems so far away!) Skagerak is truly a community and it is at this time of year that it really shows, in the hallways, classrooms and in the students faces. The 2017 school year will bring new learning experiences, new challenges and new fun. I look forward to what lies ahead for us as at Skagerak!

I hope to see as many parents as possible at the Primary winter performance or before the break begins next Wednesday, but if not I wish you all Peace, Joy, Hope and Happiness during this Holiday season and throughout the New Year.

Kind regards, James Tester

Parent Conferences

Skagerak International School will be holding Student/Parent/Teacher conferences for the first term on Monday 17 October and Tuesday 19 October. The focus of these meetings so early in the year is to set goals for the coming academic year and start a conversation about how to succeed in the months to come. Therefore, the students are asked to come to this meeting to discuss these future goals. It is important that parents sign up for a session with your child's homeroom and specialist teachers and any of their specialist teachers as well.

Please see the separate parent email that was sent to each class with instructions and internet link for signing up. Any questions may be directed to Tony Egan, tony.egan@skagerak.org.

MYP e-Assessment school

Congratulations to students in our MY5 class who participated in this year's first live session of MYP e-assessments. As part of qualifying for the new requirements to attain the MYP certificate, students have now completed work in both e-portfolio and online electronic exams. This type of external assessment is a new facet to the MYP and this new model serves to strengthen the continuum and offer MY5 students formal, recognized qualifications.

As part of our commitment to being forward thinking with regards to students' increasing awareness and engagement with technology, Skagerak International School now holds the designation of 'Leading MYP e-Assessment school'. This badge signals our leadership in a global community of schools that have embraced an innovative, rigorous and globally consistent assessment model in the MYP.

Playground upgrade phase 2

The school has committed to the next step in upgrading our outdoor play area. This year we have placed an order to replace our football goals with multiuse nets. These will be installed during week 25 and 26. The next step is raising enough funds for the rubber pitch. It is my hope that in conjunction with our parent community and local fundraising opportunities, that we can raise the remaining amount to have the full pitch ready in August. Some great work with this is already underway, but any ideas or suggestions are welcome to the Parent Council or myself!

School Mascot

Skagerak is a unique school with a diverse array of personalities and students that form our special identity. As we move forward building this identity within our combined campus, one constant request from students and staff has been to create and adopt an official school mascot. This void has been felt at sporting events and fun spirit activities within the school. With this in mind, Skagerak is officially beginning the search for an official mascot for the start of the 2016/2017 school year in August. The students are already in full swing nominating their favourite ideas for the mascot, that will eventually be narrowed down to three nominees to be voted upon by all community stakeholders. Currently "Whalers" "Trolls" and "Vikings" are amongst the most popular. Parent input and suggestions are welcome in this exciting process and all in the Skagerak community will have the opportunity to voice their opinion before August 2016. Watch the website and Facebook pages for your chance to nominate your choice!

1st Annual Skagerak Chess Tournament

We cordially invite all students, or those in the Skagerak community, who enjoy chess to participate in our first annual club tournament on Friday the 3rd of June 2016 from 15:00-18:00. Please see the attached information flyer for more details. Registration deadline is 29th May.

Lost and Found

As the weather turns warmer, many cold weather clothing items have found their way into our last and found. Please remind your son/daughter to take a thorough look through, or please take the opportunity yourself, before we have to make our annual donation to local charities. The lost and found is currently overflowing!

Coffee with the Principal - Tuesday mornings

Since Christmas I have found myself alone on the buddy bench, with no parents interested in a free cup of coffee and chat with me. A reminder that every Tuesday morning, I host a coffee morning for any interested parents. These meetings are informal and will provide an opportunity for parents to learn more about the subject areas their children are studying and to ask any questions. Coffee mornings will take place every Tuesday from 0830-0930 and are held in the High school cafeteria. All are welcome!

Kind regards

James Tester

Yearbook orders for Primary and Middle school

Orders are now being taken for purchase of the yearbook. This year's theme is "Playing Your Part." It is a collection of pictures, artwork, projects and memories of the past academic year for students in both the primary and middle school. This year's yearbook is unique in that it will be almost entirely "student produced" through the yearbook action and service group. Students will receive their yearbook on the last day of class in June.

The approximate cost is 200 NOK (the price may vary depending on the total number of orders). A giro will be sent directly to you via our accounting department at the end of the school year. Orders can be placed by either returning the order form (handed out to students this week, and attached to this email) to your child's classroom teacher or via email to admin@skagerak.org. The deadline for ordering is Friday, April 29.

Football Pitch

As we await the next upgrade to our playground and a new soccer pitch, we will be temporarily paving over the infamous gravel patch in the corner area of the current pitch. The job will be completed by the end of April and will be a temporary measure until we fully upgrade the area.

Student Pickup

Parents are kindly requested not to park in front of the high school while picking up and delivering students. Not only does this create an unsafe environment with many cars backing up with primary students heading home, it has been creating a traffic bottleneck, in the afternoons especially. The school will be approaching the owners of the property to paint directional arrows for drop off and pick up traffic, and no parking areas in front of the High school.Thank you for helping make Skagerak a safer place!
