MY2's Ramona Lundberg advances to finals in UKM

Loppemarked: for kids, by kids
During our Peace and Conflict unit of inquiry and the 2017 Cultural Diversity Day: Making the World a Better Place, we created a group to collect money for the Red Cross to help families in conflict areas.
We want to run a loppemarked for the students at Skagerak.
When: Friday, April 27th at 12:45 – 13:45 (lunch time before the whole school assembly)
Where: In the playground oval weather permitting (Back up location for bad weather to be announced)
What: Used children's books, toys, clothes and sporting equipment (skates, skis etc) in good condition. There will also be some prizes raffled as well.
Donations should be sent to the school by the 24th of April and dropped off to the PY5 classroom.
*Please note donations that don't sell, must be taken home. We are unable to responsibly recycle the leftover items here at school.

The Middle School will be hosting a Sustainability Museum next Friday 27 April kl.1300 to kl.1515. This will be the culmination of the middle school's focus days where students will be inquiring into sustainable consumption and purposeful reuse. This process is designed to investigate how we can sustain the use of something, thereby reducing the need to a) create waste and b) consume more stuff.
This event also coincides with the PY5 loppemarked and the Y11 student sustainable business challenge.
Come and join us to share in increasing awareness about responsible consumption of goods and purposeful reuse.

Building a Sustainable Future Exhibition, April 19th
As part of the science project, "Building a Sustainable Future", MY4 students were challenged to come up with solutions for the design of an energy-efficient school building. Students will present their projects in the High School Library on April 19th, 18:00-19:00. Refreshments will be served.

New additional day for homework club - now also on Thursdays

IB Diploma Visual Arts Exhibition 2018 - Monday 19 March 6-8 pm
In the high school building on Monday 19 March from 6 to 8 pm, 5 high school students pursuing the IB Diploma will exhibit their work after 2 years of studying at Skagerak International School.

Service as Action in the MYP
In our last assembly, middle school students spent time continuing to explore their options for both short and long term service in the school and within the community. As part of the MYP, all students are required to complete meaningful examples for both short and long term service projects. Options range from volunteering their time to run a club or help students after school, participating in local charity events to organizing clubs that address global issues.
Opportunities do not need to be solely in-school, we strongly encourage students to explore ways in the community where they can be of service to others. This could be as simple as shovelling the driveway for an elderly neighbour but also an ongoing commitment to visit local animal shelters or playing music at an eldresenter. Families can help to support students by helping them to see areas of need within their immediate community or finding ways to engage in service as a family where possible to foster the importance of service.

School contracts 2018-2019
The school contract for 2018-2019 will be emailed to parents at the end of this week.
We are anticipating a full school next year and will be enrolling new students from 1 March. Consequently we need to identify the number of places available and have set the contract return date to due date of Thursday 15 February. Contracts are to be returned either by email to admissions officer Cindy Hvidsten email@example.com or a paper copy to the office. Paper copies can also be picked up from the office.
School fees must be up to date in order to renew the contract – please contact Janne Larsen firstname.lastname@example.org in the accounts department if you have any questions regarding your account with us.

A note to all parents that the digital copy of their child's January 2018 progress report is now available online. For Primary parents click on the Portfolio tab for the student reflection, and Report tab for the report. For Middle and High school students, the student reflection is included within the report. Please log on to your ManageBac account to access your child's report. Contact the school office if you require assistance.

Crescendo Music School, Winter/Spring 2018
The Vocal Ensemble Club aims at developing individual singing skills, singing within a group, the basic musical skills of pitch, rhythm and expression through musical vocal techniques for the young singer. Rehearsals will be held on Thursdays from 15:30 - 16:30.

Homework Club has resumed in 2018. After school homework assistance is provided on each Monday, 3:15 to 4:00 pm, and Tuesday, from 2:45 to 4:00 pm, for all PY2-MY4 students. Students are welcome to attend if they would like some help with their homework from a member of staff.
Assisting staff for 2018 is Ms Kristina Unhjem, firstname.lastname@example.org, and unless notice is given otherwise, the homework club meets in the PY3 classroom.
All students who come to homework club must have homework to do and a book to read or drawing materials to use, should they complete their homework before they are collected. If the student attends SFO regularly, he/she will be sent to SFO when homework is completed. This is meant to be a peaceful space where a student can work quietly and receive assistance as needed.

New PE and sport facilities at Sandarhallen from January 2018
We are excited to announce that PE classes will be relocated from Runarhallen to Sandarhallen, starting immediately after the holiday. Beginning Monday 8 January, all classes will now occur at Sandarhallen. None of the times for the classes will change, only the location. It is important to consider how this may affect your regular routines from home.

Holiday greetings from the principal
Christmas holidays are soon upon us and we are nearing the halfway mark of the school year. As we soon enjoy holidays across the globe or in beautiful Sandefjord, I thought I would give you an overview of the upcoming dates and other information before we start the holidays. Middle school movie night Friday December 8th
The Middle School student council is hosting a Christmas Movie video evening on Friday December 8th with movies catering to Middle School students. This is a student run event.
High school flea market December 12th, 11:30 – 15:15
Donate your rarely-used clothes and belongings at high school's Hope for Justice CAS Christmas flea market on Tuesday December 12th, 11:30-15:15. Donations may be dropped off at the high school office on December 11th at the latest.
Primary and Middle school Santa Hat Day Thursday December 14th
Primary and Middle school students show their holiday school spirit by wearing their best Santa hat to school, a student run event. HoHoHo!
Primary school Winter Performance on Thursday December 14th, 6 pm to 8pm
Ms. Sommerschield and the Primary students and staff have been hard at work on this year's Winter Performance Primary production. The show will be from 6 pm to 8pm in the High School auditorium followed by Christmas carols organized by the Parent Council, including a visit from a special guest. Children are to meet up from at 5:30 pm.
Middle school Ugly Sweater Day on Friday December 15th
Friday December 15th is also the Annual Ugly Sweater day in the Middle school with everyone encouraged to wear their most hideous sweater. Always a good laugh!
Lunchtime dismissal on the last day of school Friday December 15th
A reminder that the last day before the December holiday is a half day with students being dismissed at 12:00 in the Primary school and 12:15 in the Middle School.
Holiday office hours
The school administration will be open 10 am to 2 pm 18- 19 December and will then close for holidays. The office reopens 3 January.
Monday January 8th school starts
School resumes with normal times from Monday January 8th.

The school calendar for 2018-2019 has now been approved by the board and can be found on our website on the calendar page.
Lost and found
Every year an expansive collection of Lost and Found items are collected in the Primary and Middle school. These items are displayed in the front hallway of the red building until next week. Please take an opportunity to peruse the items. All remaining items will be donated to charity on December 15th.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students and parents for their continued support from the start of the year. Skagerak is truly a community and it is at this time of year that it really shows, in the hallways, classrooms and in the students faces. The 2018 school year will bring new learning experiences, new challenges and new fun. I look forward to what lies ahead for us as at Skagerak!
I hope to see as many parents as possible at the Primary winter performance or before the break begins next Friday, but if not I wish you all Peace, Joy, Hope and Happiness during this Holiday season and throughout the New Year.

Zulufadder House Team Competition Results

Parent Technology Evening - 7 December, 19:00
We have the pleasure of inviting all parents of our MY1-MY4 students in the Art room for a Parent Technology Evening on Thursday 7 December. Interested parents of PY5 and PY6 students are also invited to join us.
This evening will focus on the technology the students are currently using in class such as OneNote, Sharepoint and Managebac. We will be going through these 3 programmes through the eyes of a Middle School parent, and help identify ways to best support or follow along with students at Skagerak. It is my hope that both new and veteran parents will find this evening useful.
Topics covered include:
- Following the curriculum and homework calendars on Managebac
- Navigating the Sharepoint and Inquiry pages relating to ongoing units in the various disciplines
- OneNote technology and the learning tools embedded within
Cakes and coffee will be served for this information evening. Please bring a laptop or/and Ipad for some hands on training! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this, or any additional technology topics you would like covered.

House team competition for Primary and Middle school - Zulufadder Action and Service
For the month of November, the Zulufadder Action and Service group is collecting stationery, construction games and board games (instructions in English) in good condition. These donations will be taken to the Zulufadder charity in South Africa in December. The House Team that brings the most will be awarded 40 points, second most 30 points, third most 20 points, and least 10 points. Both Middle and Primary School house teams will be awarded these points for their combined donations. Please put your donations in your house team boxes in Reception in the red building.

Cyber bullying/Internet awareness/Gaming seminar, 2 November
On Thursday November 2nd we will have a guest speaker, David Hasseløy from Barnevakten, coming to the school to speak with parents about cyber bullying, internet awareness and gaming addiction.
The last time we had a visit from Barnevakten about internet awareness was in March 2015 and we remember the presentation as highly relevant and useful. Given the rapid changes in media and technology, we thought it is a good time to have another session with Barnevakten. The presentation is in English, the PowerPoint slides are in Norwegian. There will be opportunity for interaction and discussion.

Once again we are offering our students a variety of our after school activities - join us now!
Homework Club for our PY2 to MY4 students meets on Tuesdays 14:45-16:25 in the PY3 classroom. Kristina Unhjem, firstname.lastname@example.org, will be leading the homework club this year.
Spanish Club for native/proficient speakers will meet on Wednesdays at 15:15 in the PS Digital Lounge with Cristina Comino, email@example.com. Dyslexia Café, October 10th
Ms. Nielsen will be hosting a Dyslexia Café in the high school cafeteria on Tuesday, October 10th from 14:45 to 16:00, together with Mr. Tester.
